Learning things, and a sick rabbit

Posted on November 14, 2014 by Jenny Posted in Uncategorized .

Let’s see what’s been happening with us lately :)

After a somewhat slow period we seem to be in a bit of a new phase of lots of learning.

When Vater was here we did a lot of great fun outings, including to the zoo, and to scitech, as well as to the always empty but oh so great kangaroo Island in the city.

There’s also been a new interest in arts and crafts

I got a boggle for kids game from the second hand market, which both boys enjoy playing :)
Lots of letter and word recognition going on

The boys are also suddenly really interested in numbers!
They constantly count to ten, for the fun of it, and have also started to count all sorts of things around them.
They ask “what number is this” a lot, and then ask me to show them how much that is.
There’s basic multiplication happening when we show how much 35 (or whatever) is, with 3 times 10 fingers, plus 5.

Yesterday they wanted to know how many sleeps to Christmas (42), and then asked me to draw that many circles on a paper for them, so they can cross one off each morning.
I drew 4 lines of ten circles, and two at the bottom.

Ethan looked at that chart for a long time, and then said “look mum, or you could say that it’s 4 of these many” (showing the 4 rows of 10), “and then 2 more!”

Pattern recognition, and multiplication, plus addition :)

So that’s all very cool and very fun, watching my little guys understand the world now and more :)

I also have some sad news, and that’s that one of our rabbits is really sick.
In case I hadn’t mentioned it, we got two beautiful, incredibly cute and very friendly lop eared dwarf rabbit girls, about 4 weeks ago.

They’ve been going great, until this morning.
When I came out to bring them their breakfast, Smoke, Ethan’s bunny, was lying down, and would not get up.
She was still breathing though, and Ethan and I took her straight to the vet.
It’s not looking good :(
They gave me some nutricious food powder which I turn into a paste and feed her with a syringe.
She’s eating that, but she’s still not moving at all.
A couple of times today I thought she had passed away, she was so still.
The vet doesn’t seem to think there’s much of a chance for her. She didn’t know what the problem was, apparently rabbits sometimes just go like that, and it could be anything.

Ethan has been so great through all of this.
At the vet he was calm and polite, softly talking to his little bunny girl and reassuring her.
Back home he’s been totally involved with the hourly syringe feeding, always calm and helpful and gentle.
My beautiful boy.

Well see how she goes.

Ok.
That was sad, so here a bit of light good stuff for the end!

The boys are absolutely in love with transformers!
We’ve been watching a great transformers kids show for about a month or two now, and we have aquired a lot of wonderful and precious transformers!
Some we were lucky to find at op shops, and some were bought new.
Opa Ernst got them each two amazing new ones while he was here, oh the joy!!

At the moment we’re getting one new affordable one per week :)

Here is Ethan with some of them, the other day, when he was introducing the latest recruit to the rest of the rescue team

Oh, and another amazing thing we got a while ago was this awesome play dough farm set!
I found it at the op shop for $2, and the boys spent hours playing with it!
You squish the play dough into a hole at the top, wind the handle, and out plops a farm animal! Continue reading →
