Things the boys are into at the moment

Posted on February 26, 2015 by Jenny Posted in Uncategorized .

Here’s a record of what the boys are into at the moment, for fun, for later :)

Both of them are into ancient Egypt at the moment.
We’re exploring it through books, and movies, conversions, museum trips, play…
They also like learning about the human body!
Especially Ethan likes to sit and pour over books for ages

image

They both love learning about wild animals!
One of their favorite shows at the moment is “Wild Kratts”, which is all about the amazing features and lives of our world’s wild animals!

image

They love going to the zoo, the museum and scitech (our amazing hands on science museum).
We’ve been to scitech twice last week ;)

They like climbing up trees and rock walls, especially Leo!

Ethan enjoys drawing and writing a bit at the moment.
He’s really into organizing things neatly sometimes, putting all his pencils in the pencil case just the right way, packing a bag or suitcase in just the perfectly organized way.

He also like baking!
These are the absolutely delectable honey cakes Ethan and I made today

Leo really loves playing these amazing and challenging games on the ipad, they are adventure quest style games.
The first one we all played and loved together was “Machinarium”, which is just beautiful and challenging and sort of relaxing at the same time.

image

The first time it took us many many days to play the entire game, now he plays through it in an hour!
“Monument Valley” is another one that has been popular and is really lovely.
It’s an intricate 3d labyrinth game with the most relaxing background music.

We’ve also discovered a new indoor play centre!
It’s a little far from us, but they currently have free entry (whohoo!), and it’s pretty great.
Because it’s biiig, and sort if run down and a little dirty and dodgy, and no staff ever checks to see if people are following the rules ;)
The boys have had many hours of fun, we’ve been 3 times in the last couple of weeks!

They love swimming at the pool, they are so great at it now!
Nancy took them yesterday and said they both swam about 150m
For a few weeks we went swimming every day!
Now that they’ve mastered this skill they’re happy to go about twice a week.

Both boys are acutely aware of voices, and especially the tone of voice!
Sometimes we’ll be walking past someone who’s talking, and Leo will say to me, sort of in awe,  “mum, this man had a beautiful voice! ”
And both of them are constantly analyzing my tone of voice, it’s quite intriguing!
They both pick up on the slightest bit of emotion in my voice, and comment on it.
“Mum, you’re talking in an angry voice! ”
Me, annoyed about something, but trying not to show it “no, just my normal voice! ”
“No mum, you’re talking a little loudly… Can you talk in a nice voice? ”

Or, softly,  “Mum? Are you feeling a little sad? ”

Or “mum, I love your cuddly voice :)”

What else is happening in Leo and Ethan world?
So far, neither of them like being around many people. Groups freak them out a bit, almost every time.
And often, they really do not want to interact with anyone at all, except the people in our little family. I think at the moment being around each other satisfies and sometimes overwhelms their need for socializing sufficiently.
So currently we have about 3 catch ups with friends per week, and then of course they see Maria and Fred and Nancy every day.

Oh, one thing they really do enjoy though lately is chatting to people when we’re out!
The checkout lady at the supermarket, or the life guards at the pool, the people at the petrol station, or just random grown ups, all get greeted, waved at and talked to.
The boys love it!
I do too :)

That’s all for today.
Bonne nuit!

Leo sweet talk

Posted on February 26, 2015 by Jenny Posted in Uncategorized .

Sometimes Leo says the most amazing things, just softly to himself, the moment before he falls asleep.

Tonight, tired from a long day of play, in the back of the car.
I heard him softly mumbling as he drifted off to sleep

“… connected. My heart; and yours. ”

Bushwalking

Posted on February 23, 2015 by Jenny Posted in Uncategorized .

Yesterday we went on a really amazing bushwalk at John Forrest reserve, about 40 min from our house!

It’s up in the hills, which was exciting in itself :)!

image

There is an old railway tunnel, build in 1895, which is now open for people to wander through. It is pretty long, and very dark in the middle!!
Next time I shall bring torches and make sure we wear proper shoes!

The park is also full of great big rocks and rock walls.
The boys have each been indoor rock climbing with Nancy once, and boy, are they confident!
Especially Leo!

The first biggish rock we came across he simply ran up on all fours without any comment, whilst Ethan was enjoying a snack.

image

image

Then after the tunnel we walked on a path with rock walls on either side.
I turned to help Ethan with something for a minute, and when I turned back, Leo had disappeared up the wall!

image

Gulp!
He was about 8 metes up this rock wall, sooo happy with himself!
I just kept thinking how the heck is he gonna get down??

image

image

Amazingly be climbed down without any problem at all!
Wow.
I’m really really impressed with his skill and confidence, and speed!

Ethan did some climbing too

That was a pretty awesome morning!

A morning with Ethan

Posted on February 16, 2015 by Jenny Posted in Uncategorized .

Today Leo went on an outing with Maria and Fred, so Ethan and I had a couple of hours to spend with just the two of us!

The morning had started exciting enough with the toaster being on fire.
I mean big fire, big flames!

image

(Leo was so excited by this! )

Luckily I was right there to throw a wet towel over it, and all was good.

Here is the cause for the fire:

image

image

Yup, water balloons, and rocks (?).

Ethan was really really genuinely sorry, I mean really. I think he had just been so engaged in his play the other day that he truly did not realize what would happen.
Oh well.
Now he knows.
Time for a new toaster! :)

Leo left for his bus trip to Fremantle with the grandparents, and Ethan and I hung out watching a science show.
At some point they made some slime on the show, and Ethan went I want to do that!!

I found us some chia seeds which we mixed with water,  and after 10 minutes they were nice and soaked and slimy, then we added some food coloring.

Fun!

image

After playing with it for a long while he asked if he could put it on a sandwich to eat :)!

:) :) :)

A little later I asked if he’d like some lunch.
He said yes!

Now, my kids are not big eaters, at all, they just don’t seem to want very much food.
They’ll usually have a couple of bites of anything, and that’s enough.
And that’s cool, they are healthy and have tons of energy, but if they really do want food every now and then I get a little excited, just because it happens so rarely!

So he really wanted a doughnut, and I happily went to find one in the freezer, but we were out.
Leo was due back any minute, so no time to go to the shops right then.
I offered to go buy some doughnuts once Leo was back, and to make him doughnut flavored pancakes in the meantime.

No thank you.
But, what he would like was

Baked beans with
A fried egg and
An orange and
Carrot and
Celery,
please.

Um, ok :)

image

And then another orange on top of that.
That was cool :)

Leo got home in the middle of that feast, felt tired, and only wanted lots of oranges

My lovely boys :)
